Inspiration (Post 2)

Bob Dylan has been an inspiration of mine since my early years of college. Part of my attraction to his work grew out of both of us growing up in Minnesota and feeling the need to leave in order to chase large-scale dreams. This quote resonated with me this morning as I sat down to continue work towards my graduate degree. I decided to find an image of Dylan and create my own graphic out of the quote. It perfectly defines the future I’m trying to create for myself by chasing this education. I want to wake up every day with a sense of purpose and attack it. I want to go to bed every night exhausted because I put my entire effort in to my work and left nothing in the tank. This is a mentality I’ve always had and it’s served me well.

Inspiration (Post 1)

“THE NATURE OF PROCESS, TO ONE DEGREE OR ANOTHER, INVOLVES FAILURE. YOU HAVE AT IT. IT DOESN’T WORK. YOU KEEP PUSHING. IT GETS BETTER. BUT IT’S NOT GOOD. IT GETS WORSE. YOU GOT AT IT AGAIN. THEN YOU DESPERATELY STAB AT IT, BELIEVING “THIS ISN’T GOING TO WORK.” AND IT DOES!”

SAUL BASS, THE DESIGNER SAYS: QUOTES, QUIPS, AND WORDS OF WISDOM (2014)

I love the concept of embracing failure. I had to learn this lesson early on in my amateur career if I had any intention of being successful. However, I need to accept the fact that I’m also going to have to apply this way of thinking to my design journey as well. I often times find myself expecting immediate results and perfection in this area. This quote from Saul Bass serves as a great reminder that even though my field of focus is going to be different, the lesson of using failure to my advantage is always applicable.
